What is Substantive Editing?

Substantive editing (also called structural editing or content editing) goes beyond surface-level fixes to evaluate the fundamental architecture of a piece. It assesses whether the content achieves its stated purpose, whether the argument is logical and complete, whether sections are in the right order, whether the depth of coverage is appropriate, and whether the content addresses the target audience's needs. A substantive editor might recommend reorganizing sections, removing tangential content, expanding underdeveloped ideas, or reframing the central argument. This level of editing happens early in the process, before copy editing and proofreading, because it can result in significant rewrites.
