Multivariate testing (MVT) extends beyond A/B testing by simultaneously testing multiple variables and their combinations to find the optimal overall configuration. While an A/B test compares two versions of a single element, a multivariate test might simultaneously test three headline options, two image options, and two CTA options — creating 12 unique combinations (3 x 2 x 2). Traffic is split across all combinations, and statistical analysis identifies which combination performs best and which individual elements contribute most to performance. MVT is particularly valuable for content pages with multiple interacting elements — landing pages, email templates, and product pages — where the interaction between elements matters as much as individual element performance. The primary trade-off is traffic requirements: testing 12 combinations requires roughly 6 times more traffic than a simple A/B test to reach statistical significance. This makes MVT impractical for low-traffic pages but powerful for high-traffic ones.
